Belief in immortality is harmful because it is not in our power to conceive of the soul as really incorporeal. So this belief is in fact a belief in the prolongation of life, and it robs death of its purpose.

About This Quote

This quote is taken from a letter written by René Descartes to his friend and mentor, Father Marin Mersenne. It is important to note that the same month Descartes wrote this letter, he believed that he had died and was in fact dead. He believed that the soul was immortal and that it could survive trials and tribulations of the world beyond death. In the past, most people have believed in a form of a soul or spirit.

They believed in an afterlife where they would be reunited with their loved ones. However, they did not believe that their souls would be left behind in a void without anything they needed to survive. In essence, they did not believe that death was real.
